PPD Task 1

List 5 (or more) things you know now that you didn't before the break.

  1. Tumblr is a brilliant outlet for contemporary Graphic Design, allowing you to follow and reblog interesting design blogs.
  2. It is a lot more motivating living a 2-minute walk to college, than living at home an hour's bus ride away.
  3. Studios dedicate more time to design students than I initially thought.
  4. How to cook a decent meal.
  5. You can get sunburnt in Scotland.

List 5 (or more) things that you would address differently than you did this summer.

  1. I would try and push for a placement, rather than studio visits and emailing professionals.
  2. I would dedicate more time creating a solid website.
  3. I would invest in a sketchbook and draw random stuff.
  4. I would take more time out hunting for live briefs for actual companies.
  5. I would bring suncream to Scotland.

List 5 (or more) things that you will address this semester, that should be useful.

  1. I haven't used traditional methods at all in the second year, this is something that I want to address in the first module.
  2. Invest time into weaker areas of my design practice, such as icon design and infographics.
  3. Experiment with different processes, I was very restricted in the second year.
  4. Improve my presentation skills in terms of design boards and final designs.
  5. Stay in the studio more, to get feedback from designers within the course.

List 5 (or more) things that you feel we could address as a group.

  1. We should organise personal crits outside the college timetable to go through our work and get further direction.
  2. Meetings regarding our professional practice, not to brag about our placements but to discuss and share stories of how they got on the radar.
  3. We should share any interesting findings throughout the week, both in design and general life.
  4. We are doing this to an extent, but more pin-ups on the studio wall to get inspired.
  5. Organise group workshops for people who are new to a certain technique e.g. screenprinting.

List 5 (or more) things you feel we haven't looked at in PPD that you personally would like to know more about with reference to professionalism.

  1. What is the absolute best way to avoid being ripped off through freelance.
  2. What website is the best for selling work?
  3. Examples of how professionals structure their day.
  4. When is it good to volunteer, without being taken advantage of?
  5. Pricing methods for freelance work per hour.
