Advanced Design For Print: Session 1

What determines the page size?  The printed, finished, trimmed piece of work that you will come out with.  Bleed allows for imagery to come out of the designated area, standard 3mm, so the trimmed final piece won't have stray white edges through inaccuracy.  Some printers will need a little bit more, some will need a little bit less - get in contact with the printer.

Slug area is another area outside the page, larger than the bleed, and contains printer's marks.  Elements that are printed but then discarded after the final trim.  Packaging with fold marks, or custom trim lines, for example.  You can also choose to include the slug area in the final print.

Primary text frame - every new page in your document will automatically have a text frame. specified by your margins.  All pages are automatically linked, and new pages will follow this pattern.

Any images that will be placed, should be:
  • 300 dpi
  • CMYK or Greyscale
  • .TIFF or .PSD NOT .JPEG
  • Actual size
Any images resized in Indesign should be redone in Photoshop, as an image too big will come out pixelated and an image too small is dealing with a file size that is unnecessarily big.  The links palette allows you to check the specifications of a particular image.

Alt + Double Clicking the image will open it in their default program.  This allows for the image to be resized, in relation to the percentage of the resize in InDesign.  This will make the image smaller and will prevent any mishaps in the printing process.

Remember to check all the criteria when reviewing the links palette.  Also, when the document is finalised, remember to package your work!  This prevents any missing links when sending the file to print.

If any fonts are disabled, then they will be automatically enabled if a document using the font is opened.
